On 16th of June 2024, the 22nd edition of the Meeting International d’Athlétisme de la Province de Liège took place under favorable weather conditions. Maxime Carabin opened the evening with an impressive race in the 100 meters. Julien Watrin made his return in the 110-meter hurdles, and Eliott Crestan set a new Belgian record in the 600 meters. Ethiopia’s Marta Alemayo broke the meeting record in the 5000 meters, while Sweden’s Leo Magnusson did the same in the 3000-meter steeplechase.

Earlier this month, Carabin won gold in the 100, 400, and 1500 meters in the T52 category at the World Championships in Kobe, Japan. At the Province Naimette Arena, he once again showed spectators that he is in top form—an understatement. ‘Super Maxime’ completed the 100 meters in a new world record time of 16.18. ” There’s nothing better than doing this in front of my home crowd,” the Liège-based wheelchair racer said.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Julien Watrin made an emotional comeback after a long absence, finishing in the top five. Tim Eikermann won the race, while Belgian Nolan Vancauwemberghe secured a strong third place.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Marlene Meier was the fastest, with Anne Zagré finishing third. In the 100 meters, Rani Rosius finished behind Patrizia Vanderwerken, who crossed the finish line first.

In the 400 meters, Florent Mabille finished second, just behind winner Jonas Phijffers. Mimoun Abdoul Wahab took victory in the 400-meter hurdles.

The 300 meters was won by Nicole Yeargin, followed by Helena Ponette and Cynthia Bolingo.

Eliott Crestan ran a strong 600 meters and set a new Belgian record. He is now the new Belgian record holder and also holds the fastest European time of the year. Overjoyed, he said afterward: “I have been chasing this Belgian record for so long. Every time, I struggled with injuries. Tonight, everything came together—the weather, the crowd, the amazing atmosphere.” Pieter Sisk also finished under the previous record. Pieter Sisk also finished under the previous record.

In the high jump, Thomas Carmoy achieved the best jump of the evening. In the pole vault, Ben Broeders was the last man standing.

The Province Naimette Arena erupted again during the women’s 5000 meters. The young Ethiopian Marta Alemayo, just 16 years old, delivered an outstanding performance. The U20 world cross-country champion set a time of 14:39.61, smashing both her personal best and the meeting record by nearly 20 seconds! Like the event itself, Marta Alemayo seems to have a bright future ahead.

Finally, the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase also saw a new meeting record, now in the hands of Sweden’s Leo Magnusson. A fantastic conclusion to a great night of athletics!
